Raven Fire & Security will carry out a FREE security survey of your property , they will complete a Risk Analysis, this will determine the correct grading of your system , from this a written a system design proposal and a written quotation will be given.

Intruder Alarm installations now have to meet performance criteria depending on the “security grading” of protected premises. EN50131-1 specifies that intruder alarm systems must meet one of four security grades.  The security grades are based on the risk assessment of the premises to be secured:

Grade 1 – Low Risk
Grade 2 – Low to Medium Risk
Grade 3 – Medium to High Risk
Grade 4 – High Risk

Most Domestic and small commercial Installations are Grade 2, most other installations are Grade 3 , All the equipment used must carry the relevant grading label to determine its suitability for the purpose.
On completion of your system a Certificate outlining the Grading and relevant Standards to which your system complies will be issued, this is important for your Insurance Company.

The range and diversity of alarm systems available can make choosing the right system for your need quite complex. The information below is not a definitive guide, but it will help you to understand the basic differences between the main types of system on offer.

A recent Which? (June 2008) survey of 281 intruder alarm installers in the UK gave an average estimated price for an intruder alarm system for a three bedroom semi-detached house at £475.00 . A basic system might be expected to comprise of an outside siren or bell and strobe light enclosed in a weatherproof box; similar to the one in the picture above ,a digital control panel with a code or tag to set / unset the system and a number of passive intra-red movement detectors placed in vulnerable areas , usually each room on the ground floor and maybe one on the landing upstairs , usually Door Contacts fitted on the Front entrance door would be fitted , an example of the cost of a system like this consisting of 4 movement detectors and 1 door contact would be in the region of  £395.00 fitted , this would be subject to a site survey, where an exact cost would be given in a written quotation.

 Bells only alarms

This is generally the most basic option. If the alarm is triggered, an audible alarm sounds to alert you (or a neighbour) that an intruder has entered (or is trying to enter) the premises. This type of system may be appropriate for most typical dwellings. However, it depends on the location of the property, the lifestyle or nature of the occupier or the content. The system should always be fitted by a certificated installer to the relevant British Standards (link to British and European Standards PDF).

Speechdialler or Auto (GSM) dialler system

This will be a cheaper option than having a fully monitored system. With a Speechdialler, when the alarm is activated, pre-programmed numbers of your choice will be dialled and a pre-recorded message alerts the keyholder or neighbour to the alarm. If the phone line is cut or disabled no signal can be sent.

A GSM alarm unit send you and/or other contacts a text message. It is not dependent on the phone line. It can typically send a text to up to three numbers, there is no third party monitoring and can use any major high-street SIM on a network of your choice (for example O2, Orange, Virgin and so on).

Monitored systems

Our monitored stystems are commissioned through to Securi-Guard which was Formed in 1982, has over 25 years experience within the security industry.

Securi-Guard Logo

Securi-Guard Monitoring operates an NSIGold Approved Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), using the latest technologies for the monitoring of alarms(including fire), CCTV, vehiclesand lone/vulnerable workers. The accreditations for the ARC also include NSI Gold Approved Remote Video Response Centre (RVRC) and ThatchamApproved CAT5 Systems Operating Centre (SOC).
The system installed may be the same of similar to a bells only system, except that when the alarm is activated, a signal informs the remote monitoring centre. They may confirm that the alarm is not false and if necessary they inform the police.
It is important that the monitoring centre is recognised by the police. A unique reference number (URN), which identified the premises must be obtained by the Approved installer from the police when the system is installed. To get this number, the installer and the monitoring centre must be registered with a certification body (such as SSAIB).

Monitored systems do not guarantee a police response. If it is reasonably certain that someone has entered he premises, it will be flagged as a priority call. However, if a system has three false alarms in a year (four in Scotland) the URN will be revoked by the police. To be reconnected, evidence that the problem has been resolved must be provided to the police within three months.

Smoke Cloak

Where there is a need for High Security with minimum or even no loss at all, a Smoke Cloak System should be added to the Intruder Alarm System, which produces harmless vapour, that leaves absolutely no residue , or trace after its dispersal, Ideal for shops, amusement arcades,Pubs, Jewellers etc.

Thieves can't steal what they can't see ! , Smoke Cloak connects to the Intruder Alarm and is automatically activated , it can fill a room in less than 60 seconds, quite often the thieves are caught inside by the Police unable to find their way from the building,

For increased confidence when buying a fire or security system you should:

  • Use only SSAIB certificated companies.

  • Have your system regularly maintained; this may be a condition of cover.
  • Seek and follow up references.
  • Ensure that your Intruder Alarm System provider obtains a police unique reference number for monitored installation as this will be used to verify the alarm and initiate a Police response, this is applied for by Raven Fire & Security and payable by the customer , the current one off cost to your local Police Authority is £ 44.05, Only certificated providers are able to obtain Police URNs.
