POLICE have teamed up with Cash Converters, Rhyl, to launch a new crime deterrent which will help put a stop to people trying to sell on stolen property in the town.
Cash Converters on the High Street, has joined police in their drive to deter burglars and prevent the sale of stolen goods.
SmartWater colourless liquid is a unique chemical marker that can be painted on to almost any item and enables property to be traced back to its rightful owner. It is now being used in homes and businesses across the town.
Cash Converters staff will be asking customers bringing items into the store whether the property has been marked with SmartWater and if so, to confirm that it is registered to them.
They will then use a UV lamp, supplied by North Wales Police, to check for traces of the liquid.
Staff will also maintain a register of property accepted with traces of SmartWater, which will include details of the item, the date and time of the transaction and the name and address of the customer.
This would be available to police on request.
Cash Converters staff will also contact police immediately if they have concerns with a particular transaction.
SmartWater posters will be on display within the store and there will also be supplies of SmartWater leaflets available for people requiring further details.
Insp Jonny Hill from North Wales Police, said, "We are working with the community to reduce burglary. With a co-ordinated approach, the support of local businesses like Cash Converters and the use of the latest technology, we'll make it difficult for burglars to profit from crime."
Richard Addison, owner of Cash Converters, Rhyl, said: "SmartWater will play a major role alongside these existing crime reducing systems and we are pleased to be working with North Wales Police to deter criminals from trying to pass on stolen goods."
